VINTAGE NATIVE AMERICAN PIPE BAG, BEADED

This hand sewn and beaded bag is in very good condition. I believe it to be from the late 1800s - early 1900s. Made from a skunk hide and beaded with colorful tiny beads it measures 26 in. long and is about 8 in. wide. I think this was made by the Ojibway [Chippewa] Tribe in the Minnesota area. Slight deterioration to the leather at the top opening. Normal for the age of this item. This would have been a pipe or medicine bag. There is a nominal amount of old, raw, tobacco in the bottom of this bag. The beads are sewn onto red flannel that measures 3.5 x 16 in. The flannel would have been trade goods.

Wood Octopus Inro, Pipecase & Pipe

A superb Japanese inro, kizerazatsu (pipecase) and kizeru (pipe), the kizerazatsu carved of wood in an open style in the shape of an octopus, or tako, the pipe of bamboo and brass and the inro, or tonkotsu carved from wood in acylindrical, single-case, box form with wave designs from the natural wood grain, dating to the Meiji Era (1868-1912). The tonkotsu measures 3 X 3 X 2 ins. The kizeruzatsu measures 7 1/2 ins. in length; the pipe measures 9 1/2 ins. The set is signed on the base of the tonkotsu: SHURAKU TO with kakihan = Shuraku carved. Davey lists several 19th century wood carvers by this name. The wood has a fabulous patina. There is one, small rim chip repair near one of the cord holes on the tonkotsu. The octopus is featured in many Japanese tales, including the story of the carpenter Hassan, of Edo, who swore off eating octopus to get rid of his warts! Our octopus is carved in typical style as a somewhat comical figure with a pouting mouth. He is often shown with a cloth around his head, holding a fan and dancing. From this figure has come the term Tako-Nyudo, or octopus monster, which is used to refer to bald-headed people! Can you imagine a better piece of superb Japanese art for the bald-headed monster in your life?!
